Avustralya’da Adelaide Üniversitesinde bir grup araştırıcının hayvanlar üzerinde yaptıkları çalışmalar, aşırı kilonun neden olduğu bir takım zararlı faktörlerin spermler yoluyla çocuğa geçerek, gebelik gelişimini engellediği ve çocuğun gelişiminde ciddi ölçüde geriliğe yol açtığını göstermiştir.
Aslında obezitenin gebelik gelişmesi ve çocuk üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri önceden beri bilinmektedir. Eğer erkek şişmansa, bu çiftler çok daha geç çocuk sahibi olmaktalar. Bunlarda gebe kalma şansı düşmekte ve düşük riski de artmaktadır. Gerçekten de, deneysel çalışmalar aşırı yağlı beslenmenin sperm değerlerini bozduğunu ve sperm DNA’sında hasar oranlarını yükselttiğini ortaya çıkarmıştır. Bunların normal kilodaki eşlerle birleşmeleri durumunda gebelik gelişimi de bozulmakta, embriyo gelişimi geri kalmakta ve nihayet canlı doğum oranları düşmektedir. İlginç olanı, şişman erkekler diyete ve egzersize girip de kilo verdikleri zaman, sperm değerleri de düzelmektedir.

Obezitenin gebeliği önlemesine neden olan sorumlu faktör, hücreler arasında iletişimi sağlayan E-cadherin adlı bir maddenin eksikliğidir. E-cadherin, embriyonun normal biçimde gelişmesini sağlayan önemli bir maddedir. Yağlı beslenen erkeklerin yavru embriyolarında bu madde, hücreleri birbirine birleştirici etkisini gösteremiyor. Oysa babanın beslenmesine dikkat ederek ya da egzersize başlayarak fazla yağlarından kurtulmasıyla birlikte, E-cadherin de yeniden görev yerine gelerek embriyo hücrelerini bir arada tutma vazifesini yapabilmekte, neticede de sağlıklı bir gebelik gelişebilmektedir.
Obezitenin spermi bozmasında epigenetik değişiklikler denilen başka moleküler mekanizmaların da rolü vardır. Gerçekten de, diyetle ya da egzersizle aşırı kilolardan kurtulmakla sperm DNA hasar oranları önemli ölçüde azalır. Netice olarak, baba adaylarının aşırı kilolarından kurtulmak üzere beslenmelerine dikkat etmeleri, mümkünse egzersiz yapmaları eşlerinin gebe kalma ve sağlıklı bir çocuk dünyaya getirme şanslarını da anlamlı derecede artıracaktır.
